My work as a musician tends to be at weekends and evenings. Book keeping allows me to do something constructive with the weekday hours as well.
Music and maths are both forms of universal languages, and it is not unusual for people to follow both lines. Here I must confess to actually enjoying the thrill of the chase in tracking down recalcitrant differences and missing sums. A set of accounts can be seen as a whole, three dimensional inter-related single entity - just as thrilling as an opera or concerto.
Okay, so I'm a sad git, but exactly the kind of sad git you want looking after your book keeping and records. After all, what kind of personality do want in the person you'll trust your financial secrets to? Pedantic? Check. Nit picking? Check. Anally retentive? Check.
If wading through bank statements, invoices and credit card slips is the highlight of your business life then no hard feelings, enjoy. But if not, if you would rather pass on all of that to someone else, then give me a call.
And there are benefits, as well. As an ex-County Court officer, I do have some experience in using the small claims system, and have recovered sums due to me in every case apart from one - and I set Companies House on them, for failing to stick to the rules and regulations.
Running my own companies has given me the chance to see things from your perspective, as owner rather than employee. As well as having to find some rather different solutions to challenges of my own, there have been enough opportunities to learn some pretty interesting ones from other clients.
From multi-millionaires (don't ask who, absolute discretion is assured) to small micro businesses like mine, my experience includes (but is not limited to) building, civil engineering, importing, advertising, retail, wholesale, personal services, printing, asset rental, small shops, large utility companies and corporate services. All based on a solid training in banking.
Finally coming to the end of a honours degree in psychology, my aim is to move on to occupation psychology in the future. It is a long and interesting path which is constantly providing ideas, insights and experience - all of which have practical applications we can both benefit from.
If you don't like writing letters, I can handle those as well, and have successfully haggled down rent, blocked disputed claims, negotiated deals, renegotiated deals and recovered debts using my weapon of choice, the pen.
If you would like to read about some of my experiences in book keeping, 'see my published works...'
Don't forget, even if distance is a problem, we may still well be able to work together - I already have one long-distance client, where we work together using shared files, the post and the interweb.
Think it over, the next time you are trying to beat a load of receipts, invoices and statements into submission...
